September 5, 2012I hope everyone has enjoyed the last long weekend of summer.

But Labour Day is more than one final taste of summer before we get back to the routines of September. It’s a time to recognize the efforts of labour to achieve fairness and safety in our workplaces.

It’s also a time to recognize the value of work, and the contribution of the women and men who work in every industry and sector in the country. Yet inequity persists in Canadian workplaces—we haven’t achieved pay equity for women, and not everyone is given an equal opportunity to receive the promotions that will maximize her or his full talent and ability.

So perhaps Labour Day is also a good time to resolve to be a catalyst for change in our workplaces and communities. We may not change the world, but we can make our corner of it a little bit more fair.
