Little Change for Women on Boards Leads Catalyst to Take Action

The needle has barely budged for women at the top and women on boards. Despite high-profile news about gender gaps, equal pay, and women on boards—according to the 2012 Catalyst Census: Fortune 500 Women Board Directors and 2012 Catalyst Census: Fortune 500 Executive Officers and Top Earners—women’s share of Board Director and Executive Officer positions increased by only half a percentage point or less during the past year. Responding to this challenge, Catalyst has initiated the Catalyst Corporate Board Resource, which enables Catalyst’s highly respected Board Directors and member company CEOs to recommend women they personally sponsor and endorse as “corporate board-ready.” Watch the videos and read the full reports...

Make the Most of Mentoring Month

January is National Mentoring Month in the United States. Catalyst knows firsthand that mentoring and sponsorship are vital to women moving up in the workplace. Here are some resources to help you either become a mentor or find one:

  • Optimizing Mentoring Programs for Women of Color: This tool provides assistance to diversity and inclusion professionals who are developing new or refocusing existing mentoring programs for diverse women.
  • Making Mentoring Work: This research project includes several tools and research reports with information on building robust formal mentoring programs from the ground up as well as on ways to leverage existing formal mentoring programs.
  • Other Catalyst resources on mentoring and sponsoring include research reports, examples of best practices, tools, and much more.


Getting Ready For Change in India: A Step-by-Step Guide

Specifically written for organizations based in India, this tool offers insights and examples useful at all stages of the change process. Organizations considering undertaking an initiative, strengthening an initiative to maximize workforce diversity and inclusion, and seeking to sustain long-term change can use this tool to:

  • Find thought-starters that can facilitate a common understanding and build internal knowledge.
  • Initiate dialogue and discussion on diversity and inclusion with senior leaders, human resources and diversity practitioners, and managers.

Women of Color Forum – January 23

Are Diversity and Inclusion programs really addressing gender and racial bias in the workforce? According to Catalyst research, over one-third of diverse women believe that they aren’t. Katherine Giscombe, PhD, Catalyst Vice President, Diverse Women & Inclusion Research, leads a forum tackling issues concerning women of color and the subtle bias that they endure in the workplace. In Sweden Everyone is Equal. Not.

MARC blogger Lars Engstrom says, "I hear from colleagues and friends in the U.S. that Sweden has 'come so far' regarding equal opportunities. However, it’s not enough that we have 'come far.' We either have or don’t have equal opportunities. And in Sweden we don’t." Reports come and go, but sexism is strong and present throughout our society.
