Catalyst Learning Lab: Becoming an Inclusive Leader

This Learning Lab looked at the key behaviors and actions that individuals use to influence change and create inclusion. The session opened with a video to demonstrate the concept of inclusive leadership and how we can all lead others to become more inclusive—a skill in high demand in today’s diverse workplace. Emerging Catalyst research on four inclusive leadership behaviors was discussed, along with underlying concepts of uniqueness and belongingness as inherent facets of inclusion across cultures. MARC blogger Michael Welp illustrated these concepts with two inspirational stories of men leaders who helped their colleagues feel more included, and challenged their own biases in the process. Finally, a Change Agent Action Plan was introduced for individuals to drive inclusion using five tactics: Diagnose, Collaborate, Disrupt, Disarm, and Amplify. Participants were given a scenario of gender inequality and discussed strategies for applying the five tactics to the situation. Two Change Opportunities during the session asked participants to envision a leader they admire and which inclusive characteristics they had observed.

Speakers:

Deepali Bagati, PhD Vice President, Inclusive Leadership Initiative, Catalyst, Krista Brookman, Senior Director, Catalyst, Sarah Dinolfo, Director, Research, Catalyst, Candice Morgan, Senior Director and Consultant, Global Member Services, Catalyst, Michael Welp, PhD, Co-Founder and Partner, White Men as Full Diversity Partners

Catalyst Learning Lab: Developing Leaders for the Boardroom and the C-Suite

As calls for greater gender diversity on corporate boards increase around the world, companies have a unique opportunity to strengthen the pipeline of women directors. Apart from diversifying their own boards, companies can invest in their top talent by preparing, supporting, and advocating for their senior women executives to serve on boards. In developing women leaders for the boardroom, companies also develop leaders for the C-suite, as senior-level women apply the critical knowledge they acquire in the boardroom to their executive roles as well. This session will highlight company practices and provide examples of how to support women executives for board service.

At the Getting Past Stuck: Next-Level Practices Learning Lab, attendees heard from experts from 2014 Practices Recognition organizations PepsiCo Mexico, Nestlé, and National Australia Bank, as well as from 2014 Catalyst Awards Dinner sponsor Shell. As diverse as these organizations and their individual diversity journeys are, they shared similar themes around sustaining change, making the business case, engaging men, and focusing on inclusion—in particular by embracing ideas from across the organization and leveraging contributions of diverse groups of engaged employees from senior leaders to front-line employees to drive impact. During the table breakouts, attendees learned from one another by discussing the goals, successes, and challenges that their own organizations face. Themes that resonated at multiple tables included increasing accountability, driving change further down the organization, and passion for D&I work.

Catalyst Learning Lab: Jumpstart Effective Organizational Change

In the Jump-Start Effective Organizational Change Learning Lab, participants heard from Catalyst and member-company panelists about the importance of understanding your unique strengths, challenges, and opportunities—your vital signs—as the best guidance for determining which high-leverage diversity and inclusion solutions to implement next. During the presentation, Catalyst outlined two ways to discover your vital signs: 1) telling your story with workforce data and, for those without access to workforce data, 2) asking key questions that catalyze critical thinking and discussions about talent. Then, panelists described how influential their vital signs data were in galvanizing and directing actions within their organizations. When asked about these data in connection with compliance, one panelist clarified this work is focused on talent and leadership development and therefore serves a different and strategic purpose. In the breakout discussions, the participants experienced the value of asking questions about talent by discussing how they would test the validity of specific popular assumptions that prevent women and diverse employees from realizing their full potential.
