LGBTQI

Sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression—not to be confused with sexual activity or behavior—are personal characteristics that everyone has. Including LGBTQI employees is a vital component of a comprehensive diversity and inclusion strategy. Successfully recruiting, retaining, developing, and advancing LGBTQI employees helps organizations compete effectively for talent, minimize attrition costs, and better access LGBTQI consumer markets.

The LGBTQI community is an extremely complex one, often, because of its many nuances, difficult to understand. To assist in understanding these complexities, The University of California, Los Angeles, has compiled a non-exhaustive, but thorough definition of terms. To aid in dialogue, Catalyst has also created a Glossary of Terms that we hope helps ease conversation with colleagues around the topic of LGBTQI inclusion.

Coming Out Didn’t Mean Becoming A Different Person

It was well past midnight after a long, delayed flight to Florida. After having spent eight hours in an overcrowded airport, my partner Janice was about to meet my family for the first time. Worse, I could hardly put her fears to rest because my own nerves were getting the best of me. I’d never...
