Executive summary

In most conversations at work, talk about “gender” is usually talk about women and people who are nonbinary and/or trans. Men are rarely the subject, and therefore we miss opportunities to discuss men’s experiences with gender at work. Recent Catalyst research has found that men’s relationship to their own masculinity can have a profound effect on the workplace.

This questionnaire complements the research by sparking reflection on what it means to be a man in society and at work. It asks about your workplace experiences and your team culture to help you identify potential changes to your workplace that might make it more welcoming for all types of people. You may not have answers to all of the questions, especially since these topics aren’t commonly discussed. And some of the questions may probe experiences or behavior that are uncomfortable. But perhaps you’ll gain some insight into your own experiences and become more aware of how expectations for men’s behavior affect you and your colleagues.
