This resource includes scripts for five common assumptions:

  1. “Miguel’s preferred pronouns are he/him.”
  2. “But you don’t look trans. You’re so pretty.”
  3. “Have you had surgery yet?”
  4. “I knew him as his original name when we first started working together, and I don’t think I could ever call him anything else.”
  5. “This is Carl. She will be working with us to design the new marketing strategy. Oh, I’m so sorry, Carl. I called you the wrong pronoun. I meant to say, “he.” I’ve just been so stressed lately that I forgot. I’m an ally, I swear. I have a transgender niece. I really apologize.”

How to flip the script:

  1. Self reflect - Assess your thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs to understand your implicit biases and assumptions. Ask yourself how you can be a better ally to the trans community.
  2. Engage in courageous conversation - Inquire across differences with sensitivity and humility to expand your knowledge and build bridges. Avoid making assumptions rooted in stereotypes, biases, and myths
  3. Keep a growth mindset - Remain open to different experiences and perspectives, even when they challenge you or push you outside your comfort zone. Recognize that your learning is a journey.
