Catalyst Statement on Historic 2016 Presidential Nomination (Media Release)

New York, NY (June 8, 2016)—Catalyst, the global expert on accelerating progress for women through workplace inclusion, is proud to see a woman nominated for President by one of the United States’ major political parties for the first time. The historic nature of Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s candidacy is an unprecedented victory for all women in leadership—proving women can do anything—including successfully climb the ranks of government to compete for the highest office of a country.

Throughout U.S. history, women candidates have faced a challenging political landscape—and biting judgment about their gender, experience, likability, and even their appearance—while men who run for office are largely free from such criticism and generally benefit from long-held advantages within and beyond the political system.

Research shows that men are overrepresented in the U.S. Congress, holding 80% of House of Representatives and Senate seats. In fact, men not only have their fair share in government leadership, they also hold 80% of leadership positions in corporate America. The numbers speak for themselves: Governments and businesses still have a long way to go before they achieve gender equity.

Catalyst bears witness to meaningful, sustainable change when governments and businesses decide to take intentional, bold action for women’s advancement. We have seen what happens when government leaders embrace equality and foster a culture of inclusion: Everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed, their differences are valued, and they feel that they belong.
